What We’re Following Today June 22, 2020

They Got Me…

So I follow scams and try to be UBER cautious when looking at emails, but today a colleague’s email was hacked (not just spoofed) and it looked completely legitimate because I am working with him on a project that might need me to sign off on a document.

I opened the email and it said to review the document click here from “my colleague”. We are getting VERY used to signing things electronically now, so this was not abnormal. To access it, it looked like it wanted to be in a microsoft office shared documents environment, so I signed into microsoft office…but never saw the document.

I opened my other email up and had an email from him there too…he doesn’t normally send me an email to both of my emails. Fortunately because that email is Gmail it had a warning - potential phishing…d’oh. So I had signed in which would mean if it was phishing they had captured one of my passwords. So now comes the process of changing passwords on multiple accounts. Fortunately I diversified my passwords in the last few months to use different passwords for different services and therefore I don’t have to change ALL passwords, but in the meantime it’s still a pain in the butt and I have to admit that even savvy people on the look out can fall victim…GRRRRRRRR.

Be careful everyone! And if it happens to you, share your experience and warn others to be on the lookout!

Things I love About America Leading Up to the 4th of July

Western Movies - primarily those from the 50’s through the 70’s. Oh man, as my girls call them, “Pow, pow, pow’s”. I really do love a good western flick. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Gregory Peck, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda…Sometimes I am older than my age in my tastes and I guess this is one of those things. But I really do love a good one to get a feel for the flawed hero, tough and misunderstood male protagonist, chances for redemption, etc. If you haven’t seen these, here are three of my favorites: El Dorado, Shane, Friendly Persuasion.

Mark Twain - OK - so I like him more for his reputation. I have not read everything of his, nor would I profess to be an expert on him. I live in CT and only have been to his homestead once on a trip with my grandparents I think. But search him out and you’ll learn interesting things about his personality that embody an American spirit and you will undoubtedly find some good quotes.

“If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first.”

Hot Dogs and Cheese Wiz…There are many things that as an American kid I grew up eating - sure they will likely kill me one day, but I remember them fondly. Things like hot dogs, cheese wiz and twinkies…mmmmm. Yes they are processed and no, I know we are better off not eating them at all, let alone in moderation, but you know what, I’m OK with that because sometimes things do taste good even if they sound gross, AND other countries eat some pretty weird stuff too. For some items that other countries won’t sell but we as Americans will eat, click here: https://www.insider.com/american-foods-people-find-strange-2018-10

Peanut Butter and Jelly - Um…don’t think about taking that away…
